Ballot Initiative Campaign
With a poorly written ballot initiative stating that, “Marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State,” Amendment One would turn all unmarried couples — whether same-sex or opposite-sex — into second-class citizens with no legal protection. (For the record, gay marriage was already illegal in North Carolina.)
We raised our voices in opposition, far ahead of the cultural curve arguing that gay rights are civil rights. A lot of people noticed, and hopefully, had a change of heart.
